Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)

Formerly known as Aeroporto Città di Busto Arsizio, Milan Malpensa Airport is the city’s largest airport, part of a set of three aviation hubs serving the region. Malpensa serves the north of the city and the Province of Varese, both of which account for some 15 million citizens. Milan Malpensa Airport is situated approximately 25 miles or 48 km northwest of central Milano.

Milan’s northern-most airport is well connected to the city, both by road and by rail. The motorways A8 and A4 link the city with the airport and the Malpensa Express train connects the airport with Milan Cadorna train station via LeNord regional railways, taking passengers right into the heart of Milan. The train journey takes just half an hour.

Car rental companies like Hertz, Maggiore and National offer passengers cost effective travel options from Terminal 1 in addition to taxis, car sharing services, hire limousines with driver, trains, regular city and inter-airport buses.

Passengers with onward flight connections from Milan’s other airport Linate have easy access via a scheduled shuttle service and also via Milan’s regular public transport system. The third airport, Orio al Serio, is also an international airport, but handles mainly budget airline passenger traffic.

In terms of passenger numbers Milan Malpensa Airport ranks as the 21st busiest airport in Europe with some 9.6 million air travelers passing through the airport’s gates in 2021. With regard to international air traffic Milan Malpensa Airport is the second most popular airport in Italy, after Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport.

There are two dedicated terminals for passenger traffic and a cargo terminal dubbed Cargo City. A third runway was scheduled for completion last year to help Milan Malpensa Airport with the increasing passenger numbers and rising cargo traffic.

Budget travel to Milan Malpensa Airport is possible thanks to airlines like EasyJet, which made Terminal 2 its dedicated space at the airport. Indeed, EasyJet uses Malpensa as its largest base outside of the UK. The airport offers domestic, international and intercontinental flight connections, offering destinations like Amsterdam, Lisbon, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Brussels, Zurich, Munich, Istanbul and Paris in Europe, Rome and Napoli in Italy, Miami in the USA and Shanghai Pu Dong in China.

At Milan Malpensa Airport’s Terminal 1 passengers will find plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants, snack bars and Duty Free outlets to while away the time before the flight. Milan is famous for its fashion and design trade fairs; therefore, fashion, beauty and accessory shops feature largely among the selection shoppers find at Terminal 1. Most outlets are open from 7 am or 8 am to quite late in the evening – some stay open as late as 10 pm – allowing passengers to fully explore the fantastic bargains, excellent choice and glamorous products on offer.

Among the well-known names are Boggi Milano, Brooks Brothers, Bulgari and Bruno Magli, Burberry and Cerruti 1881, to name but a few stylish outlets with a base at Milan Malpensa Airport. A supermarket is also at hand for those last minute necessities no traveler can be without. The main shopping area is located on the First Floor of Terminal 1.

Cafes, snack bars and restaurants can be found in both terminals and dotted around each floor. Serving snacks and three course meals from countries as diverse as Italy, China, France and Northern America, both terminals allow passengers to relax in a friendly environment and enjoy refreshments before the onward journey commences.

Terminal 1 also offers post offices, banking and foreign exchange transactions, wireless Internet access, an Infocentre and First Aid Station, a pharmacy and a chapel. The Infocentre provides business travelers with a press room for meetings and a multimedia conference facility. For nursing mothers the airport provides a special Baby Pit Stop at the Sala Amica area, which is clearly sign-posted throughout the terminal. There are baby changing facilities and quiet areas, where mother and baby can take time out for a well-earned nap and where breast feeding is permitted in specially designated, private rooms.

Passengers have wireless Internet access in the Arrivals lounge of Milan Malpensa Airport, in the Check-in area, the Boarding lounge as well as in the various restaurants and bars located in both terminals. For passengers without a regular Internet service account or subscription to such a service, there are onscreen instructions that will connect them to a service that allows them to purchase online time.
